The uncrowded surfing beaches of Puerto Escondido Mexico
Where else can you walk around bare foot, eat really tasty fish tacos whenever hunger strikes, order slushy margaritas when you get a little hot and still have the beach mostly to yourself? Puerto Escondido translates to “Hidden Port” which for now, is still accurate. Unlike Cancun, ‘Puerto’ as locals call it, is not over run with tourists and beach touts. There is, however a growing expat community here, who clearly see its potential. Long wide beaches vary in degree of surf-ability and swim-ability. There are some big breaks around Playa Zicatela whilst other beaches like Carazilillo are safer for swimming. During the day pull up a day bed in a beach club whilst you enjoy a little shade, WiFi if you feel the need and the aforementioned tacos and margaritas.
Surfing. Hanging out with surfies. Wide empty beaches. Margaritas on the beach. Getting a tan. Clubbing on the beach. You get the idea – it’s beachy!
Best to get to:
Puerto Escondido is located on the south western coast of the state of Oaxaca and has an airport which you can reach via internal flights from Oaxaca or Mexico City. The airport is only 5 minutes from the city centre. Aeromar, Interjet and Viva Aerobus fly from Mexico city whilst Aerotucan provides services from Oaxaca.
