Bite Size Travel – Mazunte, Mexico

Laid back beach town Mazunte, on Mexico’s southern Oaxacan coast, far from maddening crowds

Why should you go?

Mazunte lies far from the large crowds of other well known resort towns in Mexico. On the southern coast of the state of Oaxaca, it’s about an hour and a half drive from much better known Puerto Escondido. A sleepy village with wide beaches and a penchant for turtle conservation. At the right time of year you can watch them lay their eggs and the offspring make their way into the ocean on a protected beach. Apart from that one generally comes to Mazunte to relax, do yoga or surf. Like Mazunte, neighbouring San Augustinillo has a handful of small unassuming restaurants if you fancy a walk or feel the urge to leave the serenity. A few minutes drive further east along the coast you’ll find the little hippy village of Zipolite. If fire twirling on the beach and sleeping in hammocks is your thing, you’ll feel right at home here. People come to stay here for a few days and end up staying months. Mazunte itself has a laid back feel and offers a small selection of restaurants and  accommodation from backpacker to boutique guest houses, a 1km stretch of flawless beach, a turtle conservation centre and a reputation for producing natural cosmetics. To experience warm hospitality in stunning surrounds, check yourself in to boutique establishment, Casa Pan De Miel.  French owner Anne provides daily homemade french baked goods and other specialties for breakfast and lunch around a large communal set table. It’s more like staying at a friend’s beautiful house which just happens to have one of the most scenic pools on a clifftop location overlooking the pacific than a hotel.

Good For:

Staring at the Pacific. Spending time on a beach without sharing it with hoards of others. Learning about turtles, watching them breed and hatchlings hatch. Surfing. Hanging out at hippy bars in neighbouring Zipolite. Eating awesome pizza with your feet in the sand at the pizza joint in San Augustinillo 3 minutes walk away. Catching up on reading with a stunning backdrop.

Best to get to:

Puerto Escondido is serviced by an international and domestic airport. Taxis at the airport will take you to Mazunte in about an hour and a half. Huatulco airports about 45 minutes by taxi from Mazunte and services domestic flights to several airports around Mexico.
